Windows 8.1 New Features Glance Look

An year after launch of Windows 8, Microsoft is ready to launch an upgrade for Windows 8, called Windows 8.1 (aka Windows Blue). Here is a list of Hot New Features of Windows 8.1.

Broadband Tethering
Windows 8.1 will support Broadband Tethering, which will allows you to turn your device into a WiFi Hotspot (like Smartphones), so you can share your internet connection easily and let other peoples can connect to your device and share your internet connection. Till now if you want to use this feature you have to use software like Connectify, so you can create a Hotspot and share your Internet.

Boot to Desktop
Windows 8.1 will support direct boot to desktop instead of showing up start screen, this feature is very useful for Keyboard+Mouse users, as whenever there Start Screen shows up they just go to Desktop. It's a feature optimized for non-touch users.

Start Button
As shown on Leaked Screenshots of Windows 8.1 and screenshots and videos of Windows 8.1 hands-on it's clear that Windows 8.1 update will have Start Button. Point to be noticed it will only include Start Button not Start Menu, Start Button will be used to go to Start Screen, how ever if you still expect to use Start Menu then it's been outdated for Microsoft, and you better use a Third Party Application program for Start Menu (see this)

Enhanced Snap Views
In Windows 8 either you can snap a Windows 8 App to left, either to right, or you can use app in full screen mode, or share screen for that app with other snapped app. Windows 8.1 allows you to re-size Snapped Portion of an App, so if you want you can share app with 40-60 share, or with 50-50 share or with either 10-90 share, and yes you can even share screen with 3 apps, how ever it's not stated anywhere whether the Divider Pane is adjustable or not.

Better Internet Explorer
Windows 8.1 will have IE11, and it's been said by Microsoft it will be Faster, enhanced Pinned sites notification, Sync of Settings and much more. Hope IE11 will be able to fulfill everything it promised.

Biometrics Locking
Windows 8.1 will have a better Biometric Locking experience specially Finger Print Lock. You can use Biometric Identity Lock anywhere (Remote Access, UAC etc). Access to Windows Store App, function between them can be controlled with this.

Others
Except above features Windows 8.1 will support Wi-Fi Direct Printing, NFC Tap-to-Pair Printing, Miracast Wireless Display.

How Fast Start Up works in Windows 8

One of the interesting feature of Windows 8 is Fast Start-Up. Your computer boot time is like 5-10 seconds only, while with previous versions of Windows (e.g. Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows Vista), it was about 30 seconds for a normal PC.

The reason of this fast boot process is the behavior that how Windows 8 shuts down. You've ever heard of Hibernate in Windows, this is the foundation of Windows 8 Fast Start-Up. In Hibernate process, backup of your RAM data has been saved to PC, which include running services, threads, DLLs being executed, programs running; these all are being processed in your primary memories (Cache or RAM), a Backup of these memories has been saved to your Local Hard Drive, while your PC is being Switched Off in Hibernate Mode. Now when you again start your Computer, after Pre-Boot Processes, that Backup has been restored to RAM and other Primary Memories. Restoring these data back to memory is time saving process then again generating data in Memory (e.g. Starting all services, threads, starting programs)

What actually happens when you shutdown your Windows 8 PC -
  • All start-up program is being closed
  • All running programs have been closed
  • System goes in to Hibernate mode (showing Shutting Down Message)
What happens when you start your Windows 8 PC -
  • Post/Pre Boot Process
  • Hiberfile Read
  • Driver Initialization
  • User Session Initialization
What happens when you start Windows XP/7 PC -
  • Post/Pre Boot Process
  • System Initialization (Drivers, Services, DLLs)
  • User Session Initialization
It looks like time taken by Windows 8 should be more as compared to Windows 7 due to one more step, but time taken by System Initialization is relatively ~ 6 X then time taken by Hiberfile Read and Driver Initialization.

Torrent Blocked, Unblock It or Use Alternatives

No wonder Torrents are the most widely used file sharing resource, all the Movies, TV Seasons, Games, Videos, Software and all other pirated stuff is first delivered to this world via Torrent (which is illegal, I suggest you to buy original/genuine/authorized product if you need it). Most often Torrent services are blocked in University, College or Hostel Campus for saving the bandwidth, because when you download a file using Torrent, its not all after downloading it starts uploading to other user (seeding), which is essential for health of Torrent, so even after finished downloading it keep using bandwidth, and in today's time it's not cheap to pay for unlimited bandwidth, Bandwidth now cost a lot.

But as student you might need to download any important file via torrent which is eventually blocked at your area, so you can use following approaches to unblock it or downloading file from a torrent.

Install .NET Framework 3.5(Offline Method) in Windows 8

Whenever a program in Windows 8 requires .NET Framework to be pre-installed, it tries to download from internet, the most funniest part is if you already have setup of any version of .NET Framework, to install that it even tries to download .NET Framework 3.5 from internet which is odd. It's bugging to install .NET Framework you must download
.NET Framework from internet. I was trying to look for any offline version of
.NET Framework 3.5 for Windows 8 and ultimately succeed.

If you tries to download .NET Framework from Internet (On Demand) you may get following errors -
  • 0x800f0906: “Windows couldn't connect to the Internet to download necessary files. Make sure that you're connected to the Internet, and click Retry to try again.”
  • 0x800F081F: “The changes could not be completed. Please reboot your computer and try again.”
Important Notes (by Microsoft) -
  • Install .NET Framework before installing any other Language Pack for proper flow
  • It works for apps created for version 2.0, 3.0 as well as 3.5
  • Windows CardSpace is not available for version 3.5 on Windows 8

Use following script to install .NET Framework Offline in Windows 8 -

You need Windows 8 Disk or either Windows 8 ISO Image file (Any Edition)
+

Just Run above downloaded Script and follow on screen instructions and you are good to go.
